For You From The Word
Faith without deeds is dead. (James 2:26, NIV)
For You To Think About
Jorge studied the letter from Anna, who had become pregnant after having an affair with a married man. The baby’s father urged Anna to terminate the pregnancy. She was afraid to compound one mistake with another. In a desperate plea for help, Anna wrote the letter to Jorge, asking for advice.
Jorge picked up the phone and placed a call to Anna.
“He told me I was very brave and strong for my child,” said Anna, age 35. “He reassured me that the baby was a gift from God, a sign of Providence. He told me that I would never be left alone and that if needed, he would personally see to it that the baby could be baptized.”
Each of us can embrace a role in the issue of life: adopting a child, funding an adoption, volunteering at a pregnancy care center … or even reaching out to a mother who chooses to give her baby life, despite the circumstances and even the demand for abortion from the birth father.
Jorge modeled true life-based values: he committed not just to the woman carrying the pregnancy to birth, but he also committed to the actual life of the mother and child.
Jorge’s act reminds us that no one is too busy to encourage a pregnant woman. His full name? Jorge Mario Bergoglio. You know him as Pope Francis.
For You To Pray
Show us how to be committed not just to births, but also to the lives of women and children in difficult circumstances of life and death. Reveal to each of us the role You would have us play in the battle for life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
