For You From The Word
She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7)
For You To Think About
Today’s romanticized accounts of Christ’s birth paint various versions of Joseph’s interaction with the Bethlehem innkeeper.
In some, the innkeeper is portrayed as harried and stressed, turning away the young couple with an irritated, “No vacancy.” Other adaptations depict a kind innkeeper as a generous caretaker who provides linen, food, lights, and the promise of midwife.
Problem: scripture does not mention an innkeeper.
Nevertheless, someone in Bethlehem pointed Joseph and Mary to the stable. The couple had no GPS and was traveling in an unfamiliar city. Through the ages that anonymous someone (maybe the innkeeper, maybe not) has been acknowledged as a hero, providing practical help for a pregnant woman in need. Mary was desperate. She needed a private place to labor and give birth. The unnamed guide pointed the way.
Likewise, pregnant women and their partners today often simply need practical help. Call it mangers for modern-day moms, whether it is food, transportation, shelter, access to medical care, or even maternity clothes.
When you come alongside these hurting people and provide resources, you’re a hero.
For You To Pray
Heavenly Father,
Move in God’s people to provide practical support for women and men who face an unplanned pregnancy.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
