A Guy’s Letter to God: “I Just Found Out I’m Going to Be a Dad”

For You From The Word

Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous.
Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)

For You To Think About

guy typingDear God,

I just found out that I’m going to be a dad.

I feel confused and scared. I want to run away … but I want to take care of them, too.

It’s happened too soon. How can I know I’m ready?

I’m also discouraged. I always thought I’d be excited to become a father. There is going to be a new life – my child! But I must admit that the responsibility of caring for a mother and baby seems terrifying. I’m disappointed in myself.

I cannot do this alone. You tell me in Your Word to put away fear and to have courage. You’ve had a lot of experience as a Father.  I will rely on Your promise that You will be with me wherever I go.

Looking to You,
Your son

For You To Pray

Heavenly Father,

Help guys who face an unplanned pregnancy. Fill them with courage. Drive away discouragement. Show them how to lean on You and be good dads.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

58% Young People Don’t Know Where to Get Pregnancy Support

For You From The Word

How can they hear without someone telling them?
(Romans 10:14)

For You To Think About

Students for Life of America recently released the results of a nationwide study, which surveyed 805 Americans aged 18-24 years old and disclosed this generation’s views on pro-life issues. But the data also revealed how students view pregnancy support.

They say women need support
college student looking pensive

When asked what resources would compel women to carry their unplanned pregnancies to term, more than half those surveyed responded with one of the following: support from families, support from the child’s father, ability to continue to work or go to school, help with child care, information about adoption, and scholarships to help with financial demands. This data demonstrates that our younger generation wants to provide pregnancy support.

They don’t know where to find this support

But 58% of young people admitted that they didn’t know where to find these resources in their community or on campus, particularly for those women who do not want to choose an abortion.

That tells us we must do a better job of reaching out to the most vulnerable demographic, college-aged women, and telling them what resources and support structures are available to them.

For You To Pray

Gracious Father,
Thank You for moving in the young generation – for giving them compassion for those who face an unplanned pregnancy. Show us how to reach out to youth and college-aged pregnancy students and make them aware of resources they can use.
In Jesus’ name, Amen

911 Friend for a Pregnant Teen

For You From The Word

A friend loves at all times.
(Proverbs 17:17)

For You To Think About

Today’s teenagers and young adults place a high value on relationships.

2 Hispanic teen friendsAccording to Christian pollster George Barna, “One of the distinguishing marks of today’s kids has been their insistence upon the importance of personal relationship. They appear to esteem relationships more highly than has been the norm for more than a quarter century.”

That’s why seventeen-year-old Stephanie just told her best friend – rather than her parents or a teacher – that she’s pregnant.

Stephanie has reached out to a “911 friend” – a friend who is always loyal, even in times of trouble (Proverbs 17:17).

Three in ten girls in the U.S. get pregnant at least once by age 20, according to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. That’s a lot of girls who need a 911 friend.

If you work with teenagers, know teenagers, or have teenagers of your own, make them aware that they might encounter a Stephanie.

They don’t need to have all the answers. They simply need to listen and know where to point Stephanie for help. And stay with her.

For You To Pray

Loving Father,
Help pregnant teenagers have a “911 friend” – someone who will listen to them, encourage them, accept them, connect them to what they need, and be there for them.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Why I Attended Birthmothers Friends Training

By Emily Giacomini

I saw an announcement in The Falls Church bulletin that described Birthmothers Friends Certification Training but I didn’t know anything about the ministry. Yet one of my friends had just told me she was pregnant. She was not married. I wanted to see if there were ways to support her, so I decided to attend the training.

2 women talking at Friends trainingDuring the training, Birthmother President Jim Wright shared his story and his motivation for starting Birthmothers. It was inspiring. I appreciated his openness.

About eight people were there to be trained. Each of us was from different churches. I really liked that – Birthmothers had gotten the word out and there are people from many different congregations who want to support women and men who face an unplanned pregnancy. Each person had the opportunity to share her reason for attending. It was incredibly interesting to hear everyone’s story.

The training broadened my awareness for what it must be like to be a woman (or a man) who faces an unplanned pregnancy. It increased my conviction that people in that situation need our support. Afterwards, I spoke with my pregnant friend. I encouraged her to call Birthmothers if she wanted to be matched with a Friend or simply have someone to talk to who could be objective, accepting, and nonjudgmental about her situation.

If someone asked me whether or not they should attend Friends Certification Training, I would tell them yes – absolutely. Birthmothers is a great ministry.

In our culture, there is not enough support for those who are pregnant and didn’t plan to be. I am very grateful there is an alternative like Birthmothers. It’s an alternative that offers much more than easy access to abortion or condemnation. Birthmothers Friends are people who are willing to walk alongside someone and help that person choose life. Friends provide a life-giving choice for the mother and child, whether the mother chooses to parent or place for adoption. It is a healthy choice.

Birthmothers Friends also offer the body of Christ an opportunity. People who become Friends are saying by their actions, “We do need to take care of people who need help. We’re called to help when they’re in a difficult situation, and I’m going to do something.”

College Soccer Star Chooses Life

For You From The Word

Suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope.
(Romans 5:3-4)

For You To Think About

Nadia Link was eagerly anticipating her freshman year at power house University of California at Irvine on a soccer scholarship when she discovered she was pregnant.

Nadia and her daughter

Nadia and her daughter

She didn’t know whether to keep the baby, place it for adoption, or end the pregnancy. “It was a very strong battle morally for me, because I’m very religious,” she says. “I have a lot of faith.”

Her family disowned her. For a time, Nadia lived with the baby’s father, then a relative, and even in a car. In the end, she decided to keep the baby girl named Arianna, born in January 2009.

When the women’s soccer coach at Long Beach State University offered her the opportunity to play after giving birth, Nadia sat down with her parents. “I told them, ‘If we’re going to do this, I need all your support,’ ” she says. “ ‘I need you guys to go whole-heartedly with me.’” They rallied around her.

“My family has been a big part of my success right now,” Nadia says, crediting family members’ personal support that allows her to fill three full-time roles: student, athlete, and mother.

Two years after working hard to regain her fitness and form, Nadia has emerged as “one of deadliest attackers in the game,” leading her team to a No. 22 national ranking and a personal call-up to the U.S. Women’s Under-23 national team’s camp.

“I would do it all over again,” Nadia says. “To see Arianna now and where I am now and how close my family is, I wouldn’t trade anything for the world.”

Nadia went on to graduate from Long Beach State University and attend law school.

For You To Pray

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for helping Nadia choose life. Help other pregnant college students get the support they need to carry their pregnancies to term.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Does Your Campus Have Safe Space for Pregnant Students?

For You From The Word

When others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them the same help and comfort God has given us. (2 Corinthians 1:4, TLB)

For You To Think About

students on benchAs students head back to campuses each year, leaders look for ways to promote an environment of stability and safety. Many draw from past experiences in the wake of the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings, when college chaplains found ways to offer comfort.

At a rally at a state university, Rev. Dan McClintock helped students break into small groups to pray.

At a private Catholic college, campus minister Ruth Payne held a prayer service outdoors in a grove of blooming azaleas.

At a vigil at a private college, Rev. Narcie Jeter and 1,000 students signed a banner of encouragement.

The goal?  “To create a safe space where students can pray, vent, express doubt, sadness or grief,” said Jeter.  “That kind of space provides comfort.”

Safe space is not just for physical protection. Safe space is for emotional security, too. Students on campus who face an unplanned pregnancy face a season of fear and uncertainty. You can give pregnant students a safe space and comfort with prayer, worship, encouragement, and acceptance.

For You To Pray

Heavenly Father,

Use us this day to comfort to students who face an unplanned pregnancy.  Allow us to create a safe space for these students to pray, vent, talk and plan without fear.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Forgotten Demographic: Pregnancy on Our College Campuses

For You From The Word

A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends. (Job 6:14)

For You To Think About

college girls on stairsAs she struggled to lift her head from the pillow, Anna felt a wave of nausea. No, it wasn’t the remnants from last night’s party down the dorm hall.

Anna had morning sickness.

Anna is not alone. Studies show that between 12%-23% of America’s college students face an unplanned pregnancy.

To put it another way, imagine you’re standing on a college campus. At least one out of eight students who walks by – probably more – faces (or has faced) a pregnancy he or she didn’t expect.

College students who face an unplanned pregnancy have been called a “forgotten demographic.” They’re smart. They’re resourceful. But to assume their self-sufficiency is deceptive. Instead, it’s important to reach out to them intentionally. By providing one-on-one support to a pregnant college student (or expectant dad) you can help cultivate the drive, ambition, focus that got them to college in the first place – and give them a true choice for life.

For You To Pray

Loving Father,
Help me be sensitive to college students
who face an unplanned pregnancy and give them the support they need to choose life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conception: Too Many Details to Be Just a Random Mistake

For You From The Word

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:9)

For You To Think About

Conception of egg and sperm

Image: Oh Baby!

A lot of things have to work perfectly to create a baby: ovulation, travel, and timing. Even if all systems perform flawlessly, the odds of conceiving are only as high as about 25% each month. Consider the required conditions:

The egg is most receptive for just 48 hours … 24 hours before and after ovulation.

Sperm must take a long trip to do their job. Even the fastest of them travel just 1/8 inch per minute.

In the best of circumstances, sperm can survive just 6-7 days.

The two must meet and hook up with no “issues.”

The fertilized egg must travel and find a place to stay (“implant”) where it will stay happily for months.

All those factors (and more) must line up without a hitch in order for a pregnancy to occur.

What are the chances that the whole thing was a random mistake? Or that God was busy with other things … or He wasn’t paying attention but instead was on a coffee break?

We may call a pregnancy “unplanned,” but for it to happen is one of God’s enduring miracles.

For You To Pray

Mighty God,
A series of miracles must take place for a woman to become pregnant. You orchestrate every one of them. We worship You for Your ways which are high above ours – and for never taking a break but always being present.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your Freedom Is an Opportunity to Encourage Others to Choose Life

For You From the Word

For the man who uses well what he is given shall be given more, and he shall have abundance. (Matthew 25:29, TLB)

For You To Think About

Freedom is an opportunity and responsiblity: woman wrapped in American flagOn July 4, we celebrate freedom. Because of the sacrifices of other Americans who have gone before us, we have the freedom to pursue opportunities and to choose how to invest our lives.

But with freedom comes responsibility.  In Matthew 25, Jesus tells a story of a master who presented opportunities to three of his employees.  Two rose to the challenge. They pursued a growth strategy which helped the master expand his kingdom.

The third employee chose a different course. Rather than facing his fears, he hid the opportunity until the master returned.  His choice did nothing to grow the master’s kingdom.

Every day, 8,458 American women discover they are pregnant, although they did not plan to be.  Americans have the freedom to choose how to invest ourselves in helping them choose life. How will your choices grow God’s kingdom?

For You To Pray

Gracious God,
Thank You for the freedom to choose life and for opportunities to encourage others to do so. Help me take opportunities You give me to encourage pregnant women.
Amen.

Fatherhood Series #4: Effective Fathers Listen and Answer

For You From The Word

Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11, NIV)

For You To Think About

Fourth in a series on fatherhood

Dad with child on swingIn Matthew 7:9-11, Jesus explains God’s ability to hear and answer prayer by comparing Him to a loving father. “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? Though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children.”

Jesus’ lesson is based on a given: an effective father hears and answers his children.

Yet studies show that the average person listens at only about 25% efficiency. A father who hears just one out of four requests from his child will miss knowing what his child needs. And what child has not experienced the frustration of wondering whether or not his father heard him?

The passage provides a tidy formula in effective listening for dads.

  • Pay attention. Hear the information your child shares.
  • Process. Show your child that you heard what he said. By verbally repeating back a child’s request, a father can offer that assurance.
  • Respond. By taking action, you can provide for your child’s needs.

For You To Pray

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for hearing us and answering us. Fill fathers with that ability. Give them ears and hearts to hear their children’s needs. Allow them to respond to those needs wisely.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
